Firefighters battle blaze at Ballymun Shopping Centre

Five units of the Dublin Fire Brigade battled a large blaze at the Ballymun Shopping Centre last night.
The alarm was raised at about 10.30pm when a member of the public spotted a plume of smoke at a derelict retail unit adjacent to the Tower's pub.
A spokesperson for the fire brigade said firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control within an hour and a half.

Nobody was injured in the incident, and the investigation has been handed over the Gardaí.
Ballymun Sinn Féin Councillor Noeleen Reilly has said she is saddened to see that the Towers Pub and Shopping centre went on fire last night.
She said,
“I’m just in total shock that the Shopping Centre and the Towers Pub went on Fire last night,” she said.
“I was just speaking to the Gardaí and they are commencing an investigation into how the fire started.
“The Pub has been closed for the best part of the last year after Dublin City Council purchased it with a view to knocking it down.
“Dublin Fire Brigade got the fire under control straight away but there has been extensive water damage.
“I’m just relieved that no one was injured but it is very sad to see a building in the heart of the town centre go up in smoke despite the fact that it has been closed.
“Hopefully we will know soon enough how it started and at present the Gardaí have said to me there is nothing to indicate that it was malicious but that may change.”
