At least four men armed with AK47s and hand grenades stormed an idyllic beach at the popular resort of Grand Bassam, Ivory Coast, and gunned down 16 people in cold blood. Among the people they killed was a young child (bottom right, another child injured in the attack) who fell to his knees and begged for his life. One survivor, who saw the entire bloody attack unfold, said a bearded gunman spoke in Arabic to two children and spared the one who understood him. Soldiers and Ivorian Red Cross workers were tasked with dragging dead bodies (left and top right) from the blood stained sand outside L'Etoile du Sud hotel, where at least one person was killed.
